Below are notes from Paul Coty’s conversation about Area Strategic Plans/Major Gift fundraising:

Strategic plans are crucial in meeting people in the middle between them being business people and us being ministry people.

Ask your committee:

1. Are you willing to introduce me to your friends?

2. What could make you more confident?

Two facets of being a YL AD

  1. Shepherd- lead and shepherd people
  2. Executive- go in and sit among people that make you uncomfortable and run the business.

Our calling as YL staff is an intersection of Shepherd and Executive.

Three things to understand:

  1. Strategy (strategic plan)
    1. Takes into account- vision/mission, values, objectives, hurdles- metrics and cost and makes an invitation for people to come and support/help you.
    2. Multi-prong- involves a lot of different people along the way
  2. Business plan
    1. Second iteration
    2. The plan that communicates vision/values, metrics, and cost, and it answers the question of whether you support me.
    3. Very familiar in executive culture
  3. Case Statement
    1. The closer
    2. One-pager- picture

When you show up in that way, you train them how to treat you- they will communicate to their friends how to expect you to show up \\

Developing a case statement that speaks for you

  • Good communication needs all four needs
  • Data
    • Clear and sensible
  • Story
    • Relational equity
  • Design
    • Visual narrative
  • Shareability
    • Strategic plan
    • Consistent timeline
  • Dialing in the planning process is crucial
  • What we communicate to adults and kids can, on the surface, appear very different

A strategic plan is a boundary to tell you where you are not going. The biggest mistake I made was deviating from the plan I made

Timeline for strategic plan to create and implement is a year.

When raising funds- ask everyone: What circles are you a part of that I have not yet tapped?
